Changing Your Password

ILR Active Directory user accounts and passwords are used to login to ILR Windows computers and various ILR systems.

From an ILR PC on an ILR network

Follow these instructions when using an ILR managed Windows computer that is plugged in to an ILR network in one of the ILR offices.

  1. If you are using a laptop, disable wireless connections and confirm that you are connected to the ILR wired ethernet network
  2. Login to your Windows computer
  3. From your Windows Desktop, press the Ctrl-Alt-Del keys together
  4. Select "Change a password..." from the menu
  5. In the Old Password box, type your current Windows password
  6. In the New Password box, type a new ILR Active Directory account password, making sure it is different from your Cornell NetID password and meets ILR's Password Complexity Requirements
  7. In the Confirm New Password box, type your new password again
  8. Press Enter or Click arrow
  9. If your password does not meet the password complexity requirements, a message will appear.  Modify the password so that it will meet the requirements and repeat steps 2-7.
  10. Once you have successfully changed your password, you will need to use it the next time you log into your computer.

From an ILR PC on a remote network

Follow these instructions when using an ILR managed Windows laptop out of the office.

  1. Login to your ILR PC
  2. Connect to the internet
  3. Connect to the ILR Departmental VPN by following these instructions
  4. Follow steps 3-8 above to change your password
  5. Disconnect the VPN connection when done

From a non-ILR PC, Mac, Tablet or Smartphone:

Follow these instructions when you don't have an ILR managed Windows computer.

  1. Login to your device
  2. Connect to the internet
  3. Connect to the ILR Departmental VPN by following these instructions
  4. Follow these webfolders instructions to connect to https://webfolders.ilr.cornell.edu
  5. Once signed in to Webfolders, select Settings, Change password from the menu

  6. In the Old Password box, type your old ILR Active Directory password
  7. In the New Password box, type your new password making sure it meets our Password Complexity Requirements
  8. In the Confirm New Password box, type your new Windows password again
  9. Click save
  10. If your password does not meet our password complexity requirements, an error box will appear. Modify the password so that it will meet our requirements and repeat steps 6-9.
  11. Disconnect the VPN connection when done

Tip

It's understandable there may be times when you need to write down a new password to help you remember it. If you do, we suggest that purposefully omit a portion of the password and commit at least part of it to memory. In addition, be sure to store them in a secure location such as a locked drawer or in your wallet or purse.
