Chen's research interests generally lie in health and labor economics as well as experimental economics. Ongoing research projects include how the gender wage gap compares to the gender gap in total compensation, how the labor market effects of disability change over the course of the business cycle, and the labor market effects of childhood mental health conditions and disability.
